Cross-Country Road Trip Day 23

Cross-Country Road Trip Day 23

We were quite tired since our sleep kept getting interrupted the night before by the family upstairs. We had to complain to the management of the hotel four times because it sounded like a bowling alley or gym from the amount of thuds and jumping from up there!

After a wonderful breakfast at the Hampton Inn in Layton, we caught a Lyft to a hotel in downtown Salt Lake City where we were picked up by bus for a tour. Since there was minimal walking involved, I was glad we opted for the tour instead of driving all over town and having to find parking.

At Temple Square, it was disappointing that the Mormon temple had scaffolding all around it. They were retrofitting it against earthquakes. There was very little to see and the other buildings looked too modern and not something I wanted to photograph. The exception was a tiny (original) cabin from the days when the Mormons settled the area.

The house that Brigham Young had lived in was quite nice from the outside and it had a beehive on its roof. The beehive is Utah’s symbol and also mentioned in the Mormon bible. It represents working together for the good of the community.

We then toured a Catholic church. It was lovely but after the Basilica in St. Louis, it paled in comparison.

The governor’s mansion was also surrounded by scaffolding, so another disappointment since the building is quite lovely.

We drove to This Is The Place Park said to be the spot that Brigham Young told the other immigrants that this was the place they were meant to settle.

Next, we toured the capitol. It’s dome and outside are very similar to that of our nation’s capitol so it’s sometimes used in place of the real thing in TV shows and movies.

After the tour, we caught a Lyft back to the hotel. The driver was too political for my taste and I thought he needed to tone it down since he didn’t know us or our political beliefs. I tried to change the subject, but he wasn’t having it. Oh well…bad review and no tip!

Wanda and I drinking margaritas after a long day.

After lunch at Applebee’s, we acted like old people and took a nap. The rest of the day was lounging and being lazy.

Our second night was a repeat of the first, except it was a different family. The hotel comped us one night for the inconvenience.
